Post Therapy Instructions

SCALING AND ROOT PLANNING 


Bleeding:  

Light bleeding may occur for 24-48 hours. Cold wet compress can be applied to the area.

Anesthetic:  

The "numbness" should wear off in approximately 2-4 hours. However, every patient is different and these effects can last up to several hours in some cases.

Discomfort:

Any Ibuprofen or Tylenol products can be used to control mild discomfort providing that you have no allergies to these types of medications.

Liquids:        

Cold liquids may be consumed immediately. Avoid hot liquids for 12 hours and drinking through a straw for 24 hours following therapy. 

Diet:            

A softer diet (food easily cut with a fork) is recommended for the first 24 hours. Try to chew on the non-therapy side.                         

Hygiene:    

Brush lightly after eating or before bedtime. Avoid aggressive swishing for 24 hours. All home care may resume after 24 hours, including electric toothbrushes.

Rinses:      

You may begin oral rinses of antiseptic or prescription mouthwashes after 24 hours.

Activities:    

Avoid extreme exertion for the first 12 hours following therapy.

Fluoride:      

Begin using your prescription fluoride toothpaste 24 hours
